SL11B: Me

The pup is back! For most major events in Second Life my primary avatar is an accessorized Linden Animal Avatar Dog (still available in your basic Library > Clothing > Older Outfits). It is low lag, easily identifiable, and G-rated without question.

What I'm doing for Second Life's 11th Birthday (SL11B) isn't really super clear. I describe it as being Doc Gascoigne's "Girl Friday." One thing I've been promised is that I'll play Tour Pod Car Crash Dummy for hours on end sometime. Looking forward to it. And you can look forward to more posts from me about the celebration, provided I have time. Better yet, bookmark the event's official blog (here) and the Prim Perfect Web site (here) to be sure you are in the loop.

Second Life's 11th Birthday Celebration!

Second Life's 11th Birthday bash has been announced and volunteers are needed for this massive, community-run party celebrating Our World. Head to the Participate page of the official Web site to toss your hat in the ring. I've been involved in one capacity or another with each since SL5B and I can honestly say that the volunteers have the most fun.

Apply now for an exhibition space, to be a performer on one of the stages (either a DJ or live event), present something in an auditorium, or work behind the scenes with the management staff. Look around the page for options you can use to stay in touch with the staff for updates as the big event nears.

Bay City's 5th Anniversary - May 19th

There I am, enjoying a sunny Caturday and patiently waiting at the Fairgrounds for the Bay City 5th Anniversary Party, but it starts at about 1:00pm SLT tomorrow (May 19th), after the parade starting in Bay City - Harwich (SLurl) arrives at the Fairgrounds (SLurl). Entertainment will include GoSpeed Racer, Christov Kohnke, Celticmaidenwarrior Lancaster, and Rosedrop Rust. Don't be surprised if other popular groups famous around Second Life show up, too, in addition to some well-known Lindens and LDPW moles. And you know that wherever Marianne McCann goes, fireworks follow.

As you can see from this map (below), there will be several prime viewing places for the lead-up parade. Four groups will leave from the Bandshell and head out toward Route 66 at Noon SLT. The procession should last about half an hour from start to finish.

There's going to be lots of fun for everyone, whether you are a Bay City resident or not, so be sure to drop in before 1:30pm SLT when we are supposed to wrap up things. While you are waiting for the fun to start, check out the LDPW scrapbook about the building of Our Fair City.

On a personal note, I won't be exhibiting this year. With the Isle of Lesbos hidden away for now I don't have a sponsor. Not that one is needed, but I don't have a clue as to what I'd do as an individual. I do plan on being an Exhibitor Assistant, helping when the regions open to builders on May 27. What I'm doing after that, I don't know as I have no idea how things are organized. I might be a Greeter (now called Host) or angle to be with Security. I've been asked to but one thing and that is secret for now.

May 20 Volunteer/Performer, Exhibitor Applications close
May 27 Sims open to builders
June 16 Grand Opening

There will be gifts to take away – which may well include a (non-Linden) souvenir bear. There will be an auditorium for talks and presentations. And finally, there will be a time capsule into which you can put your past year’s best creations.

~~How can I be part of this?~~
You can volunteer to create your own celebratory plot, as Exhibitors are invited to show off their community and its special nature to others.

You might prefer to join the team of Hosts welcoming all the visitors and handing out gifts, helping find locations, mentoring any newcomers who might need extra help and making the party happen.

Maybe you’d rather join the rock concert atmosphere and be a Stage Manager or you are a DJ or Live Performer and would like to share your talent from one of our stages. Or perhaps you want to share your passion and knowledge as a Presenter through a lecture or roundtable discussion in our Auditorium.

Others of you might be interested in Security or Public Relations. We’re looking for your energetic participation in all of these roles.

You are invited to sign up for one or more of these areas (yes, you can volunteer for everything if you like). Orientation and Training will be provided for many of the roles. Expect that some time will be required prior to the event for that purpose.

Happy Birthday, CC!!

CC Columbo: The Man, The Myth, The Hyena. At our home in Nangrim (SLurl).
My Real Life and Second Life brother has a birthday today! Happy Birthday, CC!! You do so much to make my life happy and I want you to know I appreciate it. This is your special day, and even though you have to take the cat to the vet, buy a shirt and tie for a funeral, and make all those calls mom wants you to make ... well, sounds kinda crappy. Sorry. But there will be ice cream cake later and breakfast at iHop is on me this morning!! Now bring on the pix!!

The oldest known picture of CC in Second Life. He's at Rainbow Tiger in his first week some five years ago.

Our current treehouse sits on this very spot. The pond was deep enough for swimming. Graphics quality was so low that you couldn't tell the grass was green. I had a couple dates with the girl that lived in the little house to the right.
So did CC, we learned later, and that was awwwwkward.

CC is also an elf, thanks to a relatively recent makeover. The facial hair is new, though he usually sports it iRL.

SL8B: Must See Sites

If you haven't seen the notices everywhere, Second Life's 8th Birthday (SL8B) celebration opens tomorrow, June 20th, at 10:30 AM. More schedule information can be found here, but I'd like to give a taste of a few "must see sites" that I found.

"From A Single Prim" certainly demonstrates the birthday theme of Magic in Second Life. From a single prim, a massive 130-prim animated statue grows ... and grows .. and grows. Chuckmatrix Clip of CMC Designs very skillfully uses the XD Fusion Puppeteer scripts and some great prim work to really dazzle the viewer.

"Soaring With Magic" is one of the most imaginative builds I've seen ever in Second Life. Windyy Lane's monochromatic art piece beautifully illustrates how our world can be used by artists to step beyond the "4th wall" that usually separates the viewer from the art.

Shadows are in Second Life to stay with the latest official viewer and the "Magic Soul of Prims" lets users of that viewer play with the new feature in fun and creative ways. There are many interactive exhibits throughout the birthday sims, but be sure to see this one. It is beautiful, poetic, and fun, both inside and out. Look carefully or you might miss something!

When you boil it all down, people are the most magical part of Second Life, as Aeon Perian's "Portraits - The White Gallery" strikingly reminds us. Each avatar you see is a walking, living work of art created by unique individuals. In this gallery you'll see some very well crafted examples from people who really care about their art.

What? Only four "must see sites"? Frankly, I became overwhelmed at how many gorgeous builds there were this year and have lots of recommendations. These are the ones that I kept going back to again and again as I traveled the sims over the past few weeks. Each is striking in its own way and very evocative of the "magic" theme to this year's birthday.

Of course, there are other exhibits that are "must see" for various reasons, so here are a few more:

Yavanna Llanfair has donated her time to create tours of the birthday sims with her famous Pod cars. You've probably seen them or used them to visit the Mainland. She has an exhibit specifically about her creation, but these take you on guided tours that shouldn't be missed.
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/SL8B%20Magnificent/1/125/22

The Happy Hippo Building School's exhibit is an amusing example of the whimsy you can find all over the birthday sims. Touch the UFO to help destroy a building and aid in the downfall of ... well, I'm guessing humanity. Great fun in any case and be sure to look for other other fun, like the many amusement park rides scattered about in various sims.

Since the celebration is a cross section of the best in Second Life then why not check out how "the best" has evoloved over time? Will Webb returns for another year of his famous Time Capsules, each stuffed with goodies donated by builders at past birthday celebrations. Look for the time capsule I designed last year, the rocky arch, and see what is new this year. In the background of this pic, by the way, is the Welcome Area Tree and giant snakes. Snakes? Saunter over for a look after you visit Will's exhibit.

Landscaping is a big part of my Second Life so I couldn't help but be attracted to "Zun's Forest Magic" with it's skillful use of plants and structures. Created by a landscaper for Anshe Chung, this parcel also attracted me for it's freebies. Many exhibits feature gifts for visitors, in this case landscaping goodies.

Marianne McCann reminds us that Community is also part of Second Life's magic with her spot-on build representing the mainland community of Bay City. She's one of the best builders I know and an all-round good kid so I think you'll enjoy visiting here. When it is night, fireworks go off every 10 minutes and there is a secret dance floor. Drop by to see the schedule and get ready to par-tay! Few people rock like Mari! Many other exhibits look good at Midnight so be sure to play with those sun settings or just let the sims change the daylight as you go.
Whew ... now I'm really tired. But I'm not done. I have more parcels I'd like to showcase so if I can sneak away from the Main Stage and all the great entertainment, I'll feature them as soon as I can.

UP5B

Yes, it is Uccello Poultry's 5th Birthday! Five years ago I abandoned my Teen Grid identity and created Uccello Poultry on the Main Grid, quickly proceeding to trash the reputation of this identity, too. Even the octopi were out to get me as you can see in this 5 year old pic. The timing of the account change is not a coincidence, because unlike many another teen I knew, I waited until my 18th birthday to hit the main grid. So today I'm also 23 years old IRL. No, you may not see my baby pictures.

SL8B Parcel DONE!

Yes, yes, yes. I've been "done" since the first day building started, but as usual I've tweaked and poked and trimmed. Early this morning I got word that my 10m2 Observation Deck wasn't permitted. Some silly rule that means I can't use one despite having had one the previous several years. Oh, well. That's five more prims I could use for other things so I had 13 prims to burn. Well, 11 because I have to keep two available for dance balls to be added by Threshin Barnett, a build partner. So I added a small "beach" and a palm tree, a few columns with banners at each corner showing the exhibit logo, and decided to call it quits with just enough of a prim allowance left for the dance balls. So here's a birds-eye view:

A nice garden swing in the east (at top) and a lounge in the southwest are just two of several places for folks to kick back and relax. Two of the trees feature cuddles and there are two swimmy toobs plus a beach towel near the bar. The Isle Greeter Bot, Elspeth, is there, too, dispensing gifts and information.
Come see us (SLurl) at when we open. Here are the Dates:

  • June 20—10:00 a.m. SLT: Gates open to the public!
  • June 23—The Birthday! Special ceremonies included!
  • June 26—Last day of entertainment.
  • July 2—Gates close at 11:59 p.m. SLT

SL8B Hopes ... Realized!

It's official ... Lesbos will be at Second Life's 8th Birthday! The parcel is in SL8B Electrify on a nice corner. It won't be near some nice fountains like last year's parcel (or Honour McMillian's parcel), though, it does look like we'll be in a high-traffic area. I'm so excited!

Happy Birthday, CC!

It's my brother's RL birthday today ... he's OLD! But I have to be nice if I'm going to get some Dairy Queen ice cream cake so I thought I'd post some pix of his better side, CC Columbo in Second Life.

When I came to the Main Grid, CC was usually orange for some reason. He's on some land in Nangrim right on the sim edge. See the gray ground? It is really green. Read more about that in this post here.
He still uses this home sometimes. On the mantle from left to right are pictures of him and Kayla, a neighbor in Nangrim, and a picture of his RL daughter, Lydia Rose. She's the reason behind the Memorial Park and one of the reasons we are both in SL.
For Christmas one year I got him a nice female shape and skin as a joke. He's been changing and hiding his password pretty regularly since then. This also shows my taste in women. Oh! I need therapy.
Like me, he has many avies, but he is a hyena more often than not. Behind him is a memorial to his daughter. He always has one out somewhere in SL at any given time. I miss my niece, too.
Lately CC is an elf. I helped kit him out one day. Shopping in-world with my brother is a lot like shopping with him IRL ... we both want it to end fast. But he's pretty buff, if I do say so myself. He wanted to look his RL age and size, but I nixed that, partly on the grounds that it is hard to make an old-looking, hefty avie in SL. Clothes, attachments, and AOs seem to be all geared to the young.
Happy Birthday, CC! You are the Bestest Big Brother a girl could have. Just don't tell my other big brothers I said that, okay? Huggs!!

SL8B Hopes part 4

Today's progress  included revamping the entrance and adding a bar.
I spent most of yesterday and today in Real Life but I was able to get in some building time today and the pic above is the result. Still trying to get the essence of the Pride Club on Lesbos, I changed the "entrance" side so I could add a bar/lounge area and accommodate wading in the water (behind the bar). Since the space is limited, though, I moved the couch from inside the dance area to the lounge. Then I went crazy. I was never that happy with the bar at the Pride Club, having built better ones since the original. So I raided ideas from the Teeny Bikini Bar (pictured below) on the Lesbos north beach and built new Pride Club bar. Pleased with this I put a copy at the original, waved my magic hooves so everyone would think it always looked like that, and went on my merry way. The new version is rather primmy, much to my dismay, and brings the build to well over the 234-prim limit of the parcel.

I have to save some prims, though, as I've arranged to have a couples dance ball on site and I'd like to add some Linden Plants. But I have a plan. The 21-prim trees (each!) at the back of the dance area can be replaced by Linden trees for a big savings. Or I could just buy some nice, lower prim trees (and then update the ones at the "real" Pride Club, too) to create a fudge factor.

The rainbowy portraits to the right are in the style of what I'd like to do, and are only two prims each, but for effect I might change the frame, raising the prim count by one per picture. The design I'd love to use would make each picture about five prims. But I have a studio built for the portraits and bought six new couples animations. If I win a parcel  (please, please, please let me get a parcel) then I'm ready to shoot the pix.

One of my favorite builds ever, the Teeny Bikini Bar. With the exception of about 6 prims from a pre-fab I bought, this is all original, right down to the custom textures and scripts. This was almost the basis for my SL8B build since I like it so much.

SL8B Hopes part 3

You can't see the Observation Deck in this view.
This picture from yesterday is basically what my SL8B build looks like so far. The water, grass along the sidewalk, and the sidewalk are all temporary. If I get  a parcel it will be a pond like last year's build and the "club" will float in it. The portraits you see are just placeholders. I hope to have six to 12 couples portraits in their place (1 per side if I can get 12 or 1 per frame with pix of the Isle on the opposite ... still deciding). I won't start that until I get word if I win a parcel or not. I'm thinking a couch or a bar for the empty area on the right. Maybe a bar as that is a swing in the back, center. Up top is a nice, logo-festooned observation deck that folks will be able to use for panoramic views of the birthday builds.

The Lesbos@SL8B logo might change.

SL8B Hopes part 2

Still trying to upload images. Of all the available options Blogger has, none work. I hope it is fixed soon. Until then, here's a quick note about my Second Life 8th Birthday (SL8B) build:

I'm nearly done with the infrastructure! If I could load a picture I'd show it to you. The only things left, other than some minor decorating, will depend on whether I have a parcel or not. If I don't get one, I won't bother and the whole shebang (no pun intended) will be turned into a small, rezzable Pride Club, good for 32m x 32m parcels.

SL8B Hopes

With any luck, I'll be able to win a spot at Second Life Birthday 8 (SLB8) this year. In anticipation, I've already started a pre-build after "doodling" for several different exhibit concepts. If chosen, this will be my fourth build and I again hope to show to the world a little bit of the Isle of Lesbos.

Got my workin' gear on and a fair start already.
The birthday theme is The Magic of Second Life (the Official Wiki has more details) and my build will use a miniature version of the Pride Club (featured in my previous post here). The idea is to highlight the magic of SL relationships, such as those like the couples that have met at the Isle and bonded in relationships from casual to very deep.  For the Isle specifically, it has been (and will continue to be) for women to safely explore same-sex relationships, be they chummy friendships or lasting romances.

The exhibit will be a place for visitors to get to know the Isle and one another with a place to dance and opportunities to sit and chat. I also hope to have portraits of SL couples and information about the LGBT lifestyle.

I should know by May 31st, should everything goes well, if I'll have exhibit space or not. Likely I'll have the majority of the build done before then and find myself making endless tweaks.

SL7B: The Isle of Lesbos

The Isle of Lesbos is at the Second Life Birthday celebration for the third year in a row and once again features art, but this time the pieces come from within the Isle sisterhood as part of the event theme of Unexpected Collaborations. Also featured is a nice swing nestled in a fantasy meadow that has a great view of the surrounding builds. If you want to relax, cool off with one of the lagoon's floaty toobs. These are free to copy as is some of the art that is on display.

Of course, the art is the focus and below, in order, are some previews from Temoren Drathman, Airethilien Banach, Angela Seale, and Jenshae Werefox.

Some of my art is on display, too, and I have to put in the disclaimer that I built the exhibit, too. I would have had a much harder time, though, if it weren't for my wonderful wife and Build Assistant, Angela Seale.

The exhibit should be one of the many fine builds listed in the official Destination Guide (Web) but check out official SL7B blog (Web) for information about the whole event.

SL7B: An Overview

It is Second Life Birthday time again! As of a few days ago I've been on the main grid a full four years and if the Internet Time Acceleration Principle holds, it feels like 10-times longer. Under this premise, our World is now 70! Really, though, it is just seven years old (give or take, depending on when you celebrate the actual inception) and this year's party is ready to rev! Official opening is on the 21st at 10AM SLT but we denizens of the Press are getting a preview right now. I've already posted on the Lucky Kitty Crew blog (Web) about some of the gifts that are available and will follow up here with posts about individual exhibits and activities. There is no way I can be exhaustive ... cripes, just the number of sims is a bit overwhelming ... but start with these resources listed below and check back here throughout the run of the event.
  • The official SL7B blog has the latest news and a great teaser machinima (Web)
  • The SL7B wiki has the nitty gritty details like dates and policies (Web)
  • Bear Island is a great first stop to see a ton of Linden Bears, old and new (detailed post later; Web)
  • A really great set of Flickr pix from Radioactive Rosca (Web)
  • The Destination Guide will be featuring some of the best builds (in-world or Web)
  • Daniel Voyager was spotted early on during the Press Preview so watch his blog (Web)

Year in Review: 2008

Apologies for the lack of posts since the first of the year. I've been busy in both lives and feeling a little bit ill in one of them. I've been doing my best to keep up with the Lucky Kitty Crew blog (Web) that I contribute to as well as commenting on other blogs. But to get back into the swing of things I thought I'd tiptoe through my photo library and grab images that leaped out for comment in a Year in Review of 2008. No particular order here and it is far from inclusive. Just some extra insights.

Coming face-t0-face with Governor Linden I learned a few things. First, Lindens really can remove themselves from the presence server. You may be able to see one, talk to one, or transfer inventory, but any scripts that depend on agent detection simply won't work. Thus, the Gov missed a hug from a really smexy lion. The second thing I learned is that Lindens really are people. The human behind this version of the Gov had trouble getting a simple giver script to run and couldn't set the box for sale at L$0. She turned down my offer of a free giver script. FYI, that is my wife, Angela, to my right with the white hair band. We wuz holdin' hands ... xtra kute.

I did quite a bit of exploring. Usually I'd grab something from a Lucky Chair then I'd wander around to see what else the region contained. That's how I found this giant sign for Sun Microsystems. Sometimes I'd just open the map and pan around looking for interesting sim names or patterns then teleport. Many blogs reported interesting places, too, that were well worth exploring. At least once a week I use the Stargate at home to find a '/drandom' place. Seeing what others are doing in-world is definitely one of my most favorite things to do.

:::sighs::: Moved a lot. This is a shot of my home in Navi. It was a bit expensive, especially compared to the sweet deal my sister Threshin gave me, but it was still rather nice. This is where Angela and I fell in love and it was her first home in-world. You'll find lots of pictures and posts about my "favorite" home throughout this blog, including later in this post. Today Angela rents a sim that we call home but in reality I have several spots I now roost, including the Isle of Lesbos, one of my first homes in-world.

It is on the Isle I have family, friends, and a job. It's a great place to laugh and play. Nary a day goes by that something silly doesn't happen to brighten my moods. A lot of remodeling had happened and I've been blessed to be part of it. I don't host events on the Isle at this time, but you'll still find me assisting with Security, building, landscaping, and being a mascot (?). Just as my blog has had many posts about my lands in 2008 you'll find many a post about the Isle if you hit the archives. Two words about this pic: Anti-Gravity Boobies.

2008 was the year I came out to my family, much to their chagrin. It may be the 21st century, but being a lesbian is still not completely acceptable. My alt also came out in 2008. I stopped keeping her secret but I don't exactly advertise who she is, either. When I "wear" her I feel like a different person in many ways, though since her outing we've become very much alike. I guess that was inevitable. Of late she's started making new products for my line of goods for tiny avatars, MicroSTUFF. Most of my tiny avatar things disappeared along with tens of thousands of L$ of other items in my inventory in 2008 but she still had her stuff so she's better off working on that line. I re-branded The Poultry Company into The PoP Department store and added a line of bikinis. Now to get off my butt and make more stuff. The region that Angela rents is not just home to me, but home to my store.

Really, though, home is where the heart is, and that is with Angela. I'm in love with her. Really. Real Life means that we can't spend a lot of time together but every moment is precious. We both find it hard to log out at day's end. She's very good to me, from letting me landscape and build the infrastructure for her region to seeking my advice on nearly everything she builds to being a fabulous cuddler and lover. We celebrated our 1st year together as a couple, spouses, and partners in 2008.

It seems I spend more time with the Lucky Kitty Crew (LKC) than I do my wife despite the many down moments. But up moments like this one make it worthwhile. A number of us were on a hunt for prize-filled flamingos and decided to all meet in one place for a breather and a pic. To my right is one of my bestest friends in-world, Serenity. She can be a blast. Lately I've been modifying LOL Cat pictures to look like her avie and posting them to the LKC blog ... or sending private ones to her. Just as she's an easy target for my humor she's also been an easy target for griefers. Remember, people: She is my friend and thus falls under my protection.

The Second Life 5th Birthday celebration was a joy because I got to do a couple things I really, really enjoy: Build and promote the Isle of Lesbos. I made an abstract miniature of the Isle so people could get a taste of the landscape, activities, entertainments, and culture of the Isle and to learn more about the lesbian lifestyle. Constant fussing and picking at this display took up more time than it should have, but I had a great time and I think it was worth it. Sure, I had to airbrush out the nipples on some classic paintings. Sure we had one (minor) griefer, but overall it was a great experience that I hope to repeat for the 6th birthday celebration.

Scenes like this should have been at the birthday party, but I didn't have the room or the prims. To me, the Furries & Friends Deck in the jungle at the Isle of Lesbos represents what I think the Isle stands for ... a peaceful, relaxing natural environment, free from most of the drama and negativity found elsewhere in-world where people can gather and just be themselves. The Deck is a microcosm of the Isle with cuddles, music, free goodies, fishing, fantasy, secret suprises, intimacy, whimsy, beauty, and so many more things. Probably my favorite place on the Isle, if you were to ask.

All that describes Grendel's Children, too, a wonderful collection of regions with the best values on innovative avatars, a fabulous landscape, and plenty of places to have a good time. The regions were remodeled in 2008 and, frankly, I prefer the previous structures (like the one shown here) but the ground level landscape still rocks (pun intended). It is a beautiful desert trying hard to be verdant. 2008's intricate cave system is gone, but it is still a wonderful visit.

My home. "Uccello's Land" at Whispering Big Pines. This was my dream home. I say that because I found that I just couldn't tweak it any more. I kept finding it was perfect, just what I wanted and needed. Many thanks to the Bestest Big Sister a girl could ever want, Threshin, for letting me live there. One day I may be able to create something simliar, but my home was more than prims and mesh landscape. It was a part of me. A part of my head and my heart and my soul. If the rest of the Grid had gone away I'm sure I could have been quiet happy here. (/me pats her Inventory knowing that the components are there, waiting to be let loose ...) I'm so glad to have had this, probably the highlight of my 2008, right after being married to my Angela. When she was there with me, life was near perfect.

This is where Angela and I live now, with several items from my previous home making this corner of the world extra special. Likely I'll be tweaking for some time to come. Just today I was doing some building and landscaping. Really, I should have been swimming and playing. Or working in my store. Three-quarters of the region is dedicated to retail space (Angela's store, mine, and some tenants) but it is spread out enough that the whole environment is inviting and attractive. I should work on an interactive element, maybe adding to the back story that the region is a former volcano undergoing succession from rock and grass to more sophisticated plants (an animals? Thinking about that one.). Thank you, Angela. I know you did this as much for me as you did for having a retail space.

Not my favorite build, but Burning Life was still fun. I dipped my brushes in every primary color paint can I could find and splashed, splashed, splashed. Many folks told me they liked it so I guess it worked. At least it gave me some ideas for Burning Life '09 if I get a spot. And it was an opportunity to experiment with scripts and wild design. Hopefully folks used it for my other intended purpose: learning about diversity and the lesbian lifestyle.

Oh, the pix I left in my inventory. I could have added a dozen more, easily. Maybe some will show up here in the future as part of another retrospective or to show how things change over time. Maybe they won't. Hopefully I'll be busy making more memories, ones as happy as those I have of 2008.
